I just got an email from DriveThruRPG announcing their new print-on-demand service. Among the titles being offered is the current ("5.1") edition of
King Arthur Pendragon, up til this point only available as a PDF. The price is quite reasonable, offering a choice of softcover or hardback for $30 or $40, respectively. Also available:
The Great Pendragon Campaign! Woot!
Merlin just got his copy...by MAGIC!
I have Pendragon v5 and the Great Pendragon Campaign. The system never really sat well with me, but I think the level of detail in the GPC and the scope of the game is magnificient.
ReplyDeleteI think if maybe I could figure out how to tweak the game or hear of how other people made the system feel less... arcane? I might get back into it.
I'll be the first to admit that the system mechanics can take a bit of getting used to. For me, the biggest sticking point was that rolling a natural 20 is a fumble...until you get your skill to 20 or above, when it becomes a critical success!
ReplyDeleteLike any acquired taste, once I got past the initial hang-ups, I found the system pretty much perfect. Back when I started this blog I wrote an entry about my first successful Pendragon campaign and the lessons I took away from it.
The only serious rules overhaul I've seen online has been a Savage Worlds conversion. Of course, being an old school system, the game is very adaptable to house rules and tweaks. I've got a couple myself, and Greg Stafford is constantly posting his own house rules and tweaks on his website.
You might want to ask around at that site's Rules Questions forums--folks there are quite helpful and can probably address your issues five ways from Sunday.
I'm beta testing their Print on Demand, and ordered Pendragon v5 in softcover. I'll let you know how it is when i get it.
ReplyDeleteTenkar: I'd much appreciate a review of the binding, thanks!
ReplyDeleteHiggipedia: Coincidentally, I was going through an old folder last night and ran across a PDF I downloaded a couple years ago. I can't for the life of me remember from whence it came, but it presents a modification of the Pendragon engine that bases it on a d6 bell curve. Definitely an effort to modernize the rules a bit. Thought you might be interested. PDF is uploaded here.
I've ordered GPC as PoD and PDF. I have edition 1 of the rules - and this setting is one of @thePricessWife's favorites. So we might be venturing forth. My first Pendragon campaign... I'll be referring to a lot of examples on how to play it!
ReplyDeleteGo man go! I hope you and your lady have a blast with it. Even if you don't hew to the main events described in the book, the GPC is an indispensable almanac for keeping track of what's going on in the wider world from year to year. Based on lessons learned the hard way, I do heartily recommend you give the book a cover-to-cover cursory read before running anything, just so you know what's what, which seemingly innocuous NPCs go on to become important, etc.
ReplyDeleteAlso, having the GPC in PDF is, I've found, all but mandatory sometimes, since doing a search is a lot easier than manually flipping through 500 pages... ;)
