Synchronicity

Interesting timing that my copy of Traveller: The Classic Books should arrive the same day that The Sword's new classic-sci-fi-themed music video debuts...

In all seriousness, this is actually the first time I'll have any edition of Traveller in my possession. I'm looking forward to diving in and seeing what all the hype and nostalgia is about. Along with supers, classic sci-fi is the one genre I've never really played or run and that I'd very much like to at some point in the future. When I do, I'll be sure to refer back to the above video for inspiration.

(And if you're wondering what happened to the Pendragon updates, I'm working on the next one and may even have it up for your Turkey Day reading pleasure. The management appreciates your patience and cooperation during this unplanned interruption.)

  2. Does this edition include the possibility of character death during creation? First ed did.. I grew up with it in the house, and and lost a character or two during gen, the time or two we busted it out.

  3. Christian: The Sword's entire ouvre is like someone said, "Let's put a band together that will serve as pure undiluted inspiration fuel for gaming."

Katie: Indeed! The book is simply a bound reprint of the original three "little black books" and Books 4 through 8. I'm looking forward to rolling up some characters and seeing if any kick the bucket. ;)

  5. Some unsolicited advice for this volume:

Don’t skip Book 0. I think it sets a—I’ll say “tone” for lack of a better word—that I think is helpful in understanding cT.

Starter Traveller or The Traveller Book include some examples that can clarify the intent of some rules. (I believe ST is currently free at RPGNow.)

Assume that the referee is improvising some situational modifiers for personal combat.

The “advanced” character generation in the later books isn’t quite compatible with Book 1 character generation. Advanced characters will have many more skills than basic ones. There have been various ways to “fix” this. Mine was to simply go back to basic and ignore the advanced. The other mechanics from the later books, however, can be pulled in ad hoc when their extra detail is desired.
